Upcoming and Recent Events
Zeffy.com has offered to donate $2500 to three non-profit organizations hosting events this month of October. Join us for another Nautical Halloween Contest and help us be eligible for this generous gift!
This Fall we will continue to present off-site talks at area Libraries, virtually, and at other venues. We are also planning another season of working water dog demos for 2025. If you have a dog that is a traditional water breed and can demonstrate one or more skills, please get in touch!
In July we participated in the Rockland Maritime Heritage Festival and hosted a Homing Pigeon Workshop. Homing pigeons have a millennia-long history as working birds during war and peacetime. They were the original maritime messengers, carrying trading and military news between ships and their home bases. Karl Rau of Red Cape Wings Loft in S. China ME brought several of his birds and gave an overview of their working and racing history. At the conclusion of his presentation, he released two of his birds, which made it home before he did!
In May, we hosted our first Mini Golf Charity Benefit since relocating here to mid-coast Maine. This family-friendly event supported the funding and publicity for our community outreach educational programs, including STEAM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Art/Math). These innovative learning exercises foster young entrepreneurs, historians, leaders, scientists and teachers.
This February, in honor of President's Day, we hosted Open Houses on February 17 and 18 with several exhibits featuring famous mascots. Visitors came from around the state and all had stories to share.
Our Nautical Halloween tradition was reintroduced last year with winners in three categories: bird, cat and dog!
STEAM programs are now available for lower through upper school levels and Scout groups. Our first in a planned series focuses on the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery Expedition made from 1804-06. The science/technology/engineering/art/math program gives students the opportunity to learn and practice one or more skills in each of those areas. Give us a call to schedule a session at your school or a remote learning session.
If you have an idea or suggestion for a program or a research question, please let us know. 207-390-5909 or info@museumofmaritimepets.org
Library and youth reading programs are available year-round, featuring stories and exhibits about maritime pets throughout the ages and from around the world. Call or email to arrange a program for your group. 207-390-5909 info@museumofmaritimepets.org
